Breaking news: Gros Morne National Park

What wonderful news to share from CPAWS:

Dear Gros Morne National Park supporters,

I am writing to share some very exciting news about our campaign to protect Gros Morne National Park.  We have just heard that Shoal Point Energy, the company that proposed to drill and frack for oil metres from the park, has had its request to extend its offshore exploration license turned down by the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB).  This means that after January 15th, 2014, the area off the coast of Gros Morne will be closed to oil and gas exploration activity for an undetermined period of time.

This breaking news follows hot on the heels of the November 4th announcement by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador of a moratorium on all fracking in the province to allow for more review and public consultation.

These two positive decisions are the direct result of people like you voicing concern, and speaking up for the future of our most special places and the communities that rely on them. For this we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Today’s news is a fabulous gift to celebrate in the lead up to this holiday season.  At the same time we are mindful that this is not the end of our work to protect Gros Morne.  It is a critical, but temporary, reprieve.  CPAWS and our local partners will re-double our efforts next year to ensure that a buffer zone is created around Gros Morne that will keep the park and surrounding area permanently free of industrialization.

You can help secure this permanent protection for Gros Morne National Park and World Heritage Site by sending a letter to the C-NLOPB, and the provincial Minister of Natural Resources thanking them for these two recent decisions, and encouraging them to take steps to implement a permanent buffer zone around Gros Morne.

Working together I am confident we can save Gros Morne forever!

Alison Woodley CPAWS National Director, Parks Program

Another letter to write but it is so worth the positive results !!
