Here is some wonderful news from Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada:
Today we made history — again. After two and a half years with only one Green Party Member of Parliament — we have doubled our caucus!
I am thrilled to share the wonderful news that there is now a second Green Member of Parliament in the House of Commons. It is my pleasure to welcome Bruce Hyer, MP for Thunder Bay-Superior North.
Bruce will be at home in the Green Party, as he has been a strong advocate on environmental issues since the 1970s. In fact, we both were organizers of the very first Earth Day. Bruce was instrumental in banning the use of DDT in his home state of Connecticut. The call of the wild lured him to the wilderness of Northern Ontario where he helped to establish the second largest wilderness area in Ontario, Wabakimi. His work on on Bill C-311, the Climate Change Accountability Act, demonstrates his commitment and expertise on tackling the Climate Crisis. Bruce remains active in defending sustainability — as a business person and also as an engaged community member. He has maintained a strong level of advocacy for passenger rail.
Perhaps most importantly, Bruce is a staunch defender of democracy. Bruce became an Independent MP in 2012 after leaving the NDP over his concern with their poor democratic record. The NDP, like all of the major parties, consistently “whips” their MPs — they must vote the party line or face consequences. Bruce believes that being whipped does not allow an MP to perform their primary duty — to represent their constituents’ voice in Parliament.
As a Green MP, Bruce will never face a whipped vote. It is the duty of a Green MP to balance the aims of the party as expressed through our policy, and the desires of our constituents as expressed through local consultation.
I am so happy to welcome Bruce to the party as a strong advocate for a healthy environment and a true democracy. I am also deeply grateful to him for making this commitment. With his help, your Green voice in Ottawa has never been stronger.
Eldy, take a moment now to welcome Bruce to the Green Party of Canada:
This is just the beginning Eldy. Canada’s future just got a little greener!
