Urgent: One last show of solidarity

Here is my share of this urgent message from Elizabeth May, Leader of the Green Party of Canada:

Urgent: One last show of solidarity
November 4 , 2013

Apologies for another email on this subject but we feel that this issue is fundamental to our parliamentary democracy.

On Tuesday, the Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics committee   will be the final committee to vote on the PMO directed motion to strip   individual MPs of their rights to present amendments at the report stage   of bills. All of the other committees have passed this motion but we   want to take one last stand and show this committee that Canadians care   about the rights of individual MPs.

We have prepared this letter that you can send to the MPs that sit on the Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics committee:

Subject: Respect our democracy, vote “no”

Dear Members of the Standing Committee on Ethics,

On Tuesday morning, you will be asked   to vote on a motion which will severely limit the rights of individual   Members of Parliament. Out of respect for our democracy, I ask that you   vote No.

Although all Members of Parliament   are elected to serve their constituents, and must have the tools to do   so, this motion will remove critical rights from MPs from small parties,   such as the Green Party Leader Elizabeth May and the four Members of   the Bloc Quebecois, as well as Independent Members of Parliament Bruce   Hyer, Brent Rathgeber, and Maria Mourani.

Any major change to the rules of how   the House of Commons deals with legislation must be carefully studied   not rammed through multiple committees simultaneously and without any   consideration of impacts.

These underhanded efforts by the   Prime Minister’s Office to limit the rights of individual Members of   Parliament are unacceptable, and I, along with thousands of other   Canadians, will be watching on Tuesday morning to see which members of   the Ethics Committee are prepared to stand up for Canadian democracy.

Sincerely, [Your Name]
