Burning Issue: Toxic Flame Retardants in Furniture

In February the State of California set in motion some regulatory changes that could do a lot to make furniture safer and less toxic. Due to a code called TB-117 — a fire resistance standard furniture must meet in order to be sold in California — couches, mattresses and even baby bedding is often treated with pounds of flame retardant chemicals that do more harm than good.

These proposed changes are good news for many other states as well as here in Canada – most manufacturers currently use flame retardants to meet the California standard. The new rules mean that fire safety standards can be met without the use of these toxic chemicals.

To read more about the chemical industry and flame retardants, be sure to check out this comprehensiveChicago Tribune Series. We’ll be sure to update you on this burning issue as the proposed changes may be adopted later this spring.

An Evening with Erin Brockovich

Tonight, we’re hosting the 2013 Environmental Defence Gala: An evening with Erin Brockovich. Taking place at the Eglinton Grand in Toronto, the Gala will be an opportunity for visionaries committed to a healthier planet to gather together, celebrate progress, and hear from another changemaker who is doing her part: Erin Brockovich. This tenacious crusader has helped countless people affected by toxic pollution. Funds raised will support Environmental Defence’s work to keep Canadians safe from harmful toxins, protect the water we drink, the air we breathe and improve the environment that we all share.

Stay tuned for photos from the event!

Tip of the Month: Go “Green” on your next visit to the salon

A trip to the salon can mean exposure to nasty chemicals, like formaldehyde in shampoos. Check out our March Tip of the Month for how you can better protect yourself.

Take Action: Twenty per cent of the world’s freshwater needs you

In late February, the Ontario Minister of the Environment re-introduced the proposed Great Lakes Protection Act as the new government’s first legislative agenda item. The proposed Act is being debated in the Ontario legislature right now.
