Today I have to crow a bit. I received my cheque in the mail for $75 from BC Hydro’s Power Smart Challenge. The challenge was to reduce our electricity usage by 10% over the course of a year. BC Hydro kept track of that. We did it…in fact we reduced our usage by 16%…so we got the reward!
What we did to achieve this energy usage reduction was really quite simple. We beefed up our insulation in a couple of real trouble spots in the shop. We concentrated on turning off lights when the rooms were not in use. We set a timer on our Christmas lights which are all the LED energy saving type so they were only on for 2 hours. We put our small appliances that have clocks etc on power bars which we shut off when we are not using them. Both of our computers are on power bars that we shut off when we are not using them as well. This saves what is referred to as phantom power loss as it does trickle away when left plugged in. Also we turned down the heat thermostat by 2 degrees in both the house and even more in the shop.
All of these little things added up to quite a savings in electricity usage, money and we got a cheque for $75 as well. What a good feeling!
