I told Conservative MPs on the International Trade Committee that Harper’s Canada-China treaty is a NO DEAL!

As a follow up to yesterday’s post here is the info and letter that I found at the letter writing page that Forest Ethics provided:

The Canada-China Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Act is set to become law on November 1st. It is the most significant trade treaty since NAFTA and yet Harper wants to enact it quietly without any public debate or parliamentary vote.

DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN. Don’t let Harper hand over our sovereignty in order to protect Chinese corporate profits. Send your comments to these Conservative MPs NOW and tell them you oppose this treaty. Use the letter provided or write your own. Tell them to stand up to Harper and demand a full debate in the House of Commons before we’re stuck with a bad deal for potentially the next 31 years. ACT NOW!

Dear Members of the International Trade Committee,

I’m writing to express my concern with the China-Canada Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Act (FIPA), and request that you pass a motion that allows for rigorous Parliamentary and public debate on this trade agreement that has such huge implications on our sovereignty.

Our concerns with this agreement are that Chinese companies, even with minority shares, can sue Canada outside of Canadian courts and behind closed doors. These secret tribunals run by three arbitrators, could award hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars in damages to these foreign corporations for enacting laws that protect our energy security, environment, jobs or public health. In essence, the deal provides protectionist policies for foreign profit, not for the well-being of Canadians, our economy or our environment.

The implications of this trade deal are such that it merits much more than twenty-one days of public awareness. There needs to be debate in the House of Commons, review from your Committee on International Trade with diverse speakers to analyze the deal, provincial consultations and public debate.

Thank you for considering this request. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Today’s “stone” is Day 299  Canada I am on your side, our side, snap out of Harper’s tyrannical spell people

  1. Great letter and explanation of the situation — the Conservative candidate in our election is also interested in protecting China’s interests more than our own. What is it with these guys, anyway?
