It is long past the time to take notice…it is time to act.

“Man has lost the capacity to foresee and to forestall. He will end by destroying the earth.”
-Albert Schweitzer-

It is long past the time to take notice…it is time to act. There are huge masses of plastic floating debris which includes plastic grocery and shopping bags in the Earth’s oceans.  These plastic grocery and shopping bags can strangle marine animals or, if eaten, cause them to starve to death.  Countries such as Belgium, Italy, Ireland and Hong Kong have laws in place which discourage the use of plastic grocery and shopping bags. Taxes levied on the suppliers of plastic grocery and shopping bags, retailers using plastic grocery and shopping bags and consumers using these bags are monetarily affected. Plastic bags are either restricted or completely banned in over a quarter of the world’s countries.   Italy banned plastic grocery and shopping bags entirely in January 2011. Several other countries have also banned plastic grocery and shopping bags.  Canada needs to get serious and get on board with these important measures.  Even a number of states in the USA have moved to ban plastic grocery and shopping bags at all retailers.  Reducing the use of plastic grocery and shopping bags by introducing a levy per bag has reduced use of plastic grocery and shopping bags in many other countries as well.  Hitting people in the pocket-book seems to be effective.  Come on Canada…it’s your move!

The toxic damage to the soil, oceans, marine mammals, and the atmosphere during manufacture and post manufacture usage and disposal is great and completely avoidable with a complete ban of plastic grocery and shopping bags. Paper is only just barely a better alternative to plastic grocery and shopping bags because of the trees which are used up to produce them.

Reusable cloth grocery bags are the way to go to protect our environment.  And, ideally individuals and retailers should take steps to make a ban of plastic grocery and shopping bags an integral part of their policies in order to prevent further damage.  However, perhaps it will take the government to levy a usage tax against those who continue to abuse the Earth by using plastic grocery and shopping bags.   Perhaps it is time for the government to step up and take action against those manufacturers that continue to produce plastic grocery shopping bags by taxes and fines for continued manufacture.  Perhaps it is time for the government to step up and BAN plastic grocery and shopping bags entirely.

Come on Canada get with the program…support the Earth.
